Every Gornergrat ticket, compared

All tickets
In short: five tickets are sold for this corner of Zermatt, and only two of them put you on the Gornergrat Bahn. The one almost everybody wants is the CHF 132 return, which is the operator’s own summer gate price and includes the ZOOOM exhibition at the top. The CHF 206 listing further down is the same train on the same rails. In the winter band the same return is CHF 102, and a Swiss Travel Pass or Half-Fare Card halves either figure.

What you are actually choosing between

Two of these five tickets are the identical journey at different prices. One is a different mountain altogether. One starts in Geneva and never reaches the ridge. One is a guide rather than a ride. Sorting them out is most of the work, so here they are in the order I would put them in if you were standing at my window.

The five tickets, one honest paragraph each

Gornergrat Railway Cogwheel Train Ticket, CHF 132. The flagship, rated 4.7 from 672 reviews. A return between Zermatt and Gornergrat, valid for one day, with the ZOOOM the Matterhorn exhibition included. You board opposite Zermatt’s main station and the first train leaves at 07:00. Leona, from Germany, gave it five stars and wrote that it was “perfectly organized, an experience, but very expensive”, which is the fairest sentence anyone has written about this railway. Our longer write-up is the Gornergrat railway ticket review.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise Cable Car Ticket, CHF 104. A different mountain on the other side of the valley: cable cars to 3,883 m, the Glacier Palace cut 15 m into the ice, the Crystal Ride gondola and all entrance fees. It carries 1,304 reviews at 4.8, the most of anything here. The voucher is exchanged at the Matterhorn-Express valley station, Schluhmattstrasse 123. It is not suitable for children under three or for pregnant travellers, and the last descent from the summit is 15:45. Which of the two mountains to spend your day on is the argument in Gornergrat versus Glacier Paradise.

Geneva: Zermatt and Matterhorn Day Trip by Panoramic Bus, CHF 125. Thirteen hours, departing from Geneva rather than Zermatt, rated 4.8 from 129 reviews. A coach, a driver-guide, the electric shuttle from Täsch and free time in the village, with an optional Glacier Paradise upgrade. The Gornergrat railway is not part of it. If the ridge is the reason you are coming, this is the wrong ticket and day trips to Zermatt explains why.

From Zermatt: Cogwheel Train Ticket to Mount Gornergrat, CHF 206. Read this row slowly. It is the same cogwheel train to the same summit with the same ZOOOM exhibition as the CHF 132 flagship, listed at roughly 60% more, and it holds the lowest rating in the set at 4.4 from 38 reviews. One reviewer reports his ticket failing to scan at the machine with nobody there to help. I keep it in the comparison because you will meet it, not because you should buy it.

Zermatt: Village Walk and Mount Gornergrat Private Day Trip, CHF 498. Six hours with a private local guide, an insider walk around the village, a Zermatt museum entrance, food and drinks, taxes and pickup. Seven reviews, and one of them is the useful one: Alejandra liked the views and the guide but wrote that a private tour makes it very expensive. The sums are on private tours.

The three that get compared most

The railway, the cable car and the coach are three different days out, not three versions of one. Side by side they stop looking interchangeable.

Insider tip

Buy the ticket, then spend five minutes on the platform rather than in the queue. The Matterhorn is on the right-hand side going up, and that seat is free to anyone who stands in the right place. Priority Boarding costs CHF 7 and buys three minutes, not a reservation: where to sit has the detail.

Frequently asked questions

Which Gornergrat ticket should I buy?

For most visitors, the CHF 132 return on the flagship listing. It is the operator’s own summer gate fare, it is valid all day so you can break the journey, and the ZOOOM exhibition at the top is included. If you will walk the last stretch down, the CHF 108 hiking ticket does the same summit for less.

Why are there two Gornergrat train tickets at different prices?

Because two suppliers list the same journey. The flagship is CHF 132 and the second listing is CHF 206, roughly 60% more, for the identical cogwheel train, the identical summit and the same ZOOOM entry. The dearer one also holds the lower rating, 4.4 from 38 reviews. There is no version of this ride that is worth CHF 206.

Does a Swiss Travel Pass make the Gornergrat free?

No. A Swiss Travel Pass, Half-Fare Card, Swiss Half Fare Card, GA or Adventure Card takes exactly 50% off, so the CHF 132 summer return becomes CHF 66 and the CHF 102 winter return becomes CHF 51. This is the most expensive misunderstanding on the mountain: see passes and discounts.

Is the ZOOOM the Matterhorn exhibition included in the ticket?

Yes, on both Gornergrat train tickets, and it is open daily from 09:45 to 16:15. It runs in three zoom stages: periscopes, a 3D cinema and a paragliding simulator. What else is up there, including the Golden Spot and the observatory, is in what to do on Gornergrat.

Is the railway open all year?

Yes, apart from a construction closure from 2 to 14 November 2026. Trains run every 24 minutes from 08:00 through the 20 April to 1 November 2026 season, with the first departure from Zermatt at 07:00. The timetable page covers the reduced service that follows the closure.
