Gornergrat facilities: toilets, luggage and access
What each station has
Riffelalp at 2,211 m, Riffelberg at 2,582 m and Gornergrat at 3,089 m all offer toilets, wheelchair-accessible toilets, step-free platform access, baggage drop-off and free WiFi. Riffelberg and Gornergrat add a mobile lift and boarding assistance. The gaps are worth knowing before you rely on them: Riffelberg has no ticket machine, neither Riffelberg nor Gornergrat has lockers, and Gornergrat has no wheelchair-accessible ticket counter. The one question I cannot answer
Whether the carriages themselves have a toilet. The operator does not publish it, so I will not state it either way, and I would rather say that plainly than guess on your behalf. What I can tell you is the shape of the problem: the ride is 33 minutes up and 44 minutes down, and there are toilets at Riffelalp, Riffelberg and the summit. If it matters to you, ask at the Zermatt counter on the day or check the operator’s own site.
Eating, and what the summit sells
At the top, the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat has restaurants including the Glacier Alpine Kitchen and the Sky Lounge, plus the Tiger Bowl takeaway and a small shopping mall. Riffelberg has two restaurants and Riffelalp has restaurants of its own. None of that is inside a train fare, so it is a separate line in your budget — see what to do at the top.
Drop bags rather than carrying them up. Baggage drop-off exists at Riffelalp, Riffelberg and Gornergrat, but lockers do not exist at Riffelberg or the summit, so the two are not interchangeable.
