Gornergrat discounts: which passes cut the fare

Passes & Discounts
The short answer: a Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Travel Pass Flex, Half-Fare Card, Swiss Half Fare Card, GA or Adventure Card takes exactly 50% off the Gornergrat fare. None of them makes the journey free, and that misconception is the single most expensive misunderstanding I dealt with at the ticket window. Children travel free up to their 6th birthday in summer but up to their 9th in winter, and groups of ten or more get 20%.

The 50% rule, in francs

Half of the published fare, whichever fare applies to your season and station. The summer return to the summit is CHF 132 CHF 66 with any qualifying pass; the winter return drops from CHF 102 to CHF 51. The passes that do this are the Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Travel Pass Flex, the Half-Fare Card (Halbtax), the Swiss Half Fare Card, the GA and the Adventure Card. A GA does not carry you up this mountain for nothing either. I will not comment on Eurail, Interrail or Magic Pass acceptance, because I cannot confirm it.

Children, and the rule that changes with the season

In summer, children travel free up to their 6th birthday; in winter, up to their 9th. From those ages to 15.99 the fare is half. Children aged 6 to 15.99 holding a Junior Card travel free, and the Swiss Family Card and Wolli Card also give free child travel alongside a fare-paying parent. Families overpay on this constantly, because nothing at the counter prompts you to check the date against the child’s birthday. Groups of 10 or more get 20%.

Insider tip

Buying online does not save you money on this railway, and it never has: there is no cheaper-online fare. Online tickets also require a passport or personal ID, so carry one. What a pass saves is real; what an online purchase saves is queueing time.

The full fare grid for both season bands sits on ticket prices, and if you intend to walk part of the way down, compare the reduced hiking ticket at CHF 54 on the hiking ticket page before you buy anything.

Check the fare before you use a pass

If nobody in your party carries a qualifying pass, the GetYourGuide ticket is the operator’s own fare with free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. Live prices below.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Gornergrat Bahn free with a Swiss Travel Pass?

No. A Swiss Travel Pass gives 50% off, not free travel, and the same is true of a GA. A summer return falls from CHF 132 to CHF 66 and a winter return from CHF 102 to CHF 51.

Which cards give a discount on the Gornergrat railway?

The Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Travel Pass Flex, the Half-Fare Card, the Swiss Half Fare Card, the GA and the Adventure Card, all at exactly 50%. Groups of ten or more get 20%. The fare grid is on ticket prices.

Do children travel free on the Gornergrat Bahn?

Up to their 6th birthday in summer and up to their 9th in winter, then half fare to 15.99. Children 6 to 15.99 with a Junior Card travel free, as do children on a Swiss Family Card or Wolli Card with a fare-paying parent — the seasonal detail is on the best time to go.
